According to the graph which represents how students in an American high school live their day, the students spend 6.4 hours learning and having some related activities, 1.5 hours working part time jobs, 3.8 hours having their leisure time, 0.8 hours exercising, and 0.2 hours doing religious and voluntary things. What’s special is that they spend only 6.4 hours learning and spend 8.7 hours sleeping, which means that they spend more time on sleeping than learning. In Asian countries, it is never acceptable because Asians think that diligence is the key to success. You need to study more than you sleep. Moreover, they spend 3.8 hours social and leisure time every day, and that is half of the time they spend on learning.
As far as I am concerned, I go to school at eight, and go home at five. At school, we learn for the whole day. After school, I usually go home. At night, I study; I go to bed at eleven. Therefore, the total time I learn and study is thirteen hours, and I only spend one hour watching TV, seven hours sleeping, and no time hanging on Facebook or other social networks. How I have my day is extremely different from the American students. The reason why we are so different is that our thoughts and policies are not similar. What Americans place emphasis on is creativity and whether kids are happy or not. They give students more time to think rather than do unnecessary works. In contrast, Asians thinks that the more time you spend on studying, the more successful you will be in the future, so they make kids stay at school for more than eight hours a day to study and learn, and go to bed later at night. However, not all children are suitable for this kind of lifestyle. For example, some people may have more talent in exercising, nut they don’t have enough time or don’t have any opportunity to find it. Hence, there are a lot of things that we can do to adjust our lifestyle in the future.
Being one of the luckiest people to be born in Taiwan, there are lots of things that I’m proud of. Everything in Taiwan is distinctive, fun, and irreplaceable. Among all the great things about Taiwan, there are two specific facts I personally adore. One is the people, and the other is the security. The dynamic people in Taiwan is pretty well-known around the world, for travelers’ nice words and reactions when returning back home. Taiwan people are kind and generous, they help those in need without a doubt. When seeing a person seeking for a hand, they’ll drop everything they were coping with and reach out. One of the most touching news I ever came across with, was an incident happened years ago. A car flipped over after crashing into something, the people around all came to help to lift up the car. Whether they were just passing by or stopping for the traffic light all came down to help. Not one excluded. The news touched my heart, for the beauty of such kindness in humanity is quite rare to find. As for my love of Taiwan’s safety is another thing that’s hard to find in other countries. Taiwan’s safe environment one thing that most foreigner are envious of. Most countries suffer from terror attack, robbery, and random killing. The rareness of such things in Taiwan makes it an ideal place to stay. However the low rates of criminal wasn’t due to strict discipline, in fact, Taiwan is one of the places that doesn’t have much restrictions. Therefore, in my point of view, the reason behind this is because the trust between people. Funnily enough, back in a full circle, the beauty of Taiwan’s people relies in all circumstances.
If I were to promote the distinguishes of Taiwan, I propose a small trip for foreigner students sponsored by the government. Teens have more thoughts and are the root for the future, thus it’s important to let people these age broaden their horizon and have an open mind. To extend Taiwan’s culture around the world, it’s crucial we put efforts into the tourism industry. Aside from experiencing in person, promoting online is another way. With the advantage of internet, we can now see the world without actually landing on it. Making advertisements or dramas that conclude our culture will boost the interest of foreigner as well. Take Korea for example, their dramas have successfully became the most watched shows in the world, giving a rise to their tourism income, planting interests of people worldwide, eager to know more about their culture. In conclusion, entertainment and tourism come hand in hand, hence, if I were the government authorities concerned, I will take these factors into account seriously
EVERYONE IS BEAUTIFUL: Respect Other & Be Yourself, written by Caroline Strong, is definitely the book I would love to read, Professor Strong has been doing her utmost to protect human rights as well as teaching the world how precious it is to be true to oneself. Since 1996, every book she published has inspired readers worldwide to cherish the uniqueness of every individual. As a huge fan of hers, I believe this book is not an exception. In fact, from the title “EVERYONE IS BEAUTIFUL” I know this very book not only discusses the differences between one another, but conveys the idea that beauty is actually defined by us instead of others. What’s more, she shows “how” to be beautiful, teaching us to respect others and be ourselves. Perhaps she can give me some tips so that I can cope with my problems in school, or maybe she can grant me her attitude towards life so that I can learn to define my beauty myself I firmly believe that professor Strong will again surprise me with her intelligence and creativity, and teach me even more about how to be myself in her new book.
This is the book I desire to read because for me, a senior in high school, it is rather difficult to find a balance between the world and my true self. There are nights when I wander aimlessly in town with the wind chilling me to the bone. I feel like a phantom without a soul. The world seems to have engulf my soul and thus I can no longer find myself, let alone define my own beauty. Therefore, I believe Professor Strong will once again lift me up from such mental turmoil, and lit up a candle in my heart. By reading this book, I am sure that I will no longer be lost in my longing to blend into the complicated world. As Professor Strong puts it, “Everyone is beautiful,” I know she will guide me through my high school life and eventually help me discover my real inner beauty.
Dear Ken,
How have you been doing lately? I have been quite busy and pressured lately because the college entrance exam is weeks away and we are entering the final countdown. After all, the exam may influence us for a lifetime, and I have no desire to get a poor grade.
But what about you, Ken? I’m quite concerned about you because your mother told me that you have been playing computer games for log hours and neglecting your studies. I understand that the pressure is intense for us third graders, and I cannot deny the fact that video games are fun and are a great respite from the stress we face. However, the clock is ticking, and you cannot afford to waste time on games when the test is already around the corner.
Besides, staying up late staring at the computer screen is harmful for both your eyes and the rest of your body. Your eyesight will deteriorate, and your sleep patterns will be disrupted. These may cause diseases in the long run.
Furthermore, the atmosphere in your family is getting tense because you often argue with your parents over this. Family members should live together in harmony instead of conflict, and you are causing conflicts by refusing to study. This is another reason why I strongly suggest you to sleep.
Also, think about the fun you’ll get in college! You will have much more free time to do [whatever things] as you wish. You can play computer games as long as you want to! Therefore, it is essential that you study hard now, and get into a good college. If you keep playing video games before the test, you might do poorly, and it would result in one more year of agony and pressure. Do not give up the chance of a year’s worth of fun in exchange for a few weeks of entertainment.
In a nutshell, I strongly believe that it would be appropriate for you to stop playing games, and concentrate on studying.
It was a sunny morning. In a village on the outskirts of Sichuan, the sun was shining gloriously in the deep, blue sky, while several farmers were working hard in their farm fields. In the nearby houses, women were chatting about their daily lives, as their children ran around them, playing happily. The whole village formed a picture of peace and harmony. But then it happened all of a sudden. The whole ground began to tremor violently, making all the people jump with fright. Then the trees started to fall down, crushing onto the ground. The houses in the village collapsed under the great force of the earthquake, killing all the people who didn’t manage to escape in time. Debris and fallen stones were everywhere, and beneath them, we can see injured people screaming and crying painfully, asking for help. The earthquake had turned the peaceful village into a flaming purgatory in only a few minutes.
The news of the outbreak of the earthquake in Sichuan had spread throughout the world in just a few hours. The hell-like scene was broadcast all over the world, making all the people who had seen it stunned and frightened. Search teams were distributed to the earthquake-struck areas immediately, trying to help the survivors and to treat the injured. Meanwhile, phonecalls were also pouring into organizations such as the Red Cross, asking to donate daily necessities to Sichuan. People around the world were all united as one, trying to give the quake-struck villagers support and care. With the plentiful help offered by them, the quake-struck areas are sure to come back to its original state.
It was finally a nice day with the lovely sun shining brightly in the azure sky after a whole week of pouring rain. The Lin family gathering around the car could barely hide their excitement because they had been looking forward to their postponed family trip since the first rainy day. Mrs. Lin was holding their daughter’s hand, waiting in front of the car, while Mr. Lin was loading their car with luggage, humming a catchy song to himself.
However, what they didn’t expect was the heavy traffic on the way to their destination. With a lot of cars on the high way, the Lin family’s vehicle could hardly move an inch. It had already been an hour, but they didn’t even drive a kilometer. The impatient honk could be heard everywhere, thrusting harshly through the windows into the Lin family member’s ears. The two adults were tired and frustrated, while their little daughter remained high spirit in the back seat. It was after a four-hour long driving that they finally arrived at their destination. The little girl hopped off the car as soon as her father parked the car, dragging her parents with her to the grand palace-like museum she had dreamt of visiting the moment she saw it on an advertisement. However, after seeing countless people flocking in front of the building, even the cheerful little girl started to turn her lips downward. All of them knew that there was nearly impossible that they could walk through the crowd, not to mention getting tickets to the museum. The little girl felt depressed, but she tried hard to stay positive, knowing her parents were even more pissed because they failed to have a happy family trip.
Beaming brightly, the little girl told her parents that she was hungry. The Lin family went to a beautiful restaurant with a big garden outside the main building. While taking their orders, the waitress said that they could have fun in the garden before their meals were done. Enjoying the breathtaking view, the Lin family gradually became happier. With the relaxing fragrance the flowers emitting, the Lin family regained their smiles. Holding hands with each other, they felt content even though they didn’t get to go inside the museum. After all, the point of a family trip didn’t lie in the places they visited, but in the company of family, which was exactly what they had.
